Technics SL turntable question

How do the Technics direct drive SL turntables suspend the platter? Is it magnetically suspended?

I've looked at the engineering drawings but can't make out the operation. What does the drivecoil drive - the platter or spindle? How?

Is there no physically connection between motor & driven element? If so, is this then magnetic suspension of the platter?

Second Q: Has anybody tried air bearing arm with one of these Technics?

Hi,

A direct drive motor does not magnetically suspend the platter.
The platter has a normal turntable bearing.
The Stator is fixed to the plinth, the rotor to, or is the platter.

It is a brushless DC motor, that is the rotating part does not switch
the currents, i.e. commutate uses brushes, hence the no "connection".

Hi Sreten,
The rotor is attached to the platter - is this correct? So the spindle sits in the normal oil filled bearing assembly?

So what is the quality of the bearing in these TTs as this would be a major determinant of vibration & sound quality?

Edit: Also due to the light platter used in these TTs would they be a good candidate for magnetic suspension?
