Must have to do with the vinyl softness and the elasticity of the cantilever's suspension in relation with the ambient temperature I would guess. The Denon has a rather stiff compliance BTW.

Yes, something like that. There are so many factors involved here that it is hard to say what causes what.

I am myself running a DL160 in a modified TP16 arm (carbon, eff mass 10 gr.). Sounds pleasing, no matter of temperature.

Cheers

The tip mass and it's diamond rigidity will be stable for room temperature changes. But the vinyl friction and the cantilever suspension must be more susceptible. In this frame of logic, its good to have a suspension of the stiffer persuasion it seems, so to keep tighter tolerances. The Denon sounds remarkably stable from day to day indeed. Maybe a small difference in tracking force could be compensating if there is appreciable change in between seasons for some carts?

Having given it some thought, the vinyl/tip mass resonant frequency is likely to be very nearly constant because the temperature of the vinyl as it is played is sufficiently high that a change in ambient temperature will be insignificant and not change its elasticity. And, as you say, the tip mass doesn't change. I suppose I was expecting the damping from the suspension to change things, but it doesn't appear to.

Hi salas,
Why not implement your "hump filter" earlier in the EQ amp? That way it doesn't have to deal with high signal levels and it is insulated from the outside world.

As you have observed, a lower Q hump is far more benign to listen to. A gentle hand can bring it back down.

I was thinking about inductors. Is it possible to try some made for small switching power supplies? The core would not come close to saturation and they are powdered I believe. Common operating frequencies range from 40 KHz up to 260 KHz and are available from most of the larger supply houses. Many are enclosed also, meaning that noise pickup will not be such a problem. Another thought tends towards RF coils for radio receivers. I suspect these are designed to operate at lower signal levels. Transmitting coils would be too large. Shielding for both may be an issue, although I doubt they would be efficient at 120 Hz (100 Hz for Europe). The only other way f doing this I can think of is to wind your own. Shielding is an issue again.
