I was an audiophile "from Latin audio "I hear" and Greek philos "loving" long before I even experimented with modding my Father´s garrard TT. Only now I can consider myself as a DIYer.

The common use of the term "audiophile" isn't a direct translation of the Greek roots.

This one is the most common and most acceptable definition of audiophile. It means that an audiophile is dedicated to HIGH-FIDELITY, or high quality sound reproduction.
It's different from simple "loving sound".
