Amplifier for a phono cartridge, with a remote input device integrated into the headshell / tonearm.
http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-P...S=PN/4,512,008 Commercialized by Yamaha, as the HA-2 and HA-3 phono stages. Possibly a nice DIY project, especially if you are ok with SMD devices. regards, jonathan carr

I was led to believe that in their early days Clearaudio marketed a headamp that went between cartridge and headshell.
