Default Need help With Tuner

Hi everyone,
I need help with my Sansui Tu-717. I t seems when I listen to my favorite FM station there is an annoying other station leaking through, it is ever so faint, it is making me crazy. What can I do to get rid of that leaking station?

Thanks
Slate

Hi Slate,

You probably have already tried switching to "Narrow" rather than "Wide".

If you tried that and it didn't work then the best next step has nothing to do with your Sansui.

Most of the time, the antenna can be what needs adjustment or replacement with one that might give you options like direction (hopefully both stations don't come from the exact same direction). Sometimes where you have the antenna placed also causes reflections that cause this kind of trouble especially in urban areas.

There is a lot of info on the Web about Antenna types and placement. Try Google!

Good luck.

Regards//Keith

Thanks Keith,
I was wondering about the antenna ....... Nonetheless what confuses me Keith is I went from
a Pioneer TX-7800 without that problem to a Sansui TU-717, now the Sansui is a lot more true to the sound than Pioneer, but I get that issue. I have the cheap rabbit ear antenna going, mind the station is strong (91 Jazz FM). I just can't understand why one has the problem and the other does not?

Thanks

Hi Slate,

Each has its own subtle differences that make it strong in one point and weaker in the other. Regardless, the antenna is where you need to focus for starters!

The Sansui is the right choice here and you obviously already know that!

Here is a great reference site that will give you more info than you want to know but will help with your problem(s): http://www.fmtunerinfo.com/

Your Sansui is rated number 17 in their top 80 something Tuners and the Pioneer doesn't even place.

We will see you in a couple of days when you finish all that reading! Enjoy!

And about that leaking station, just stick your finger in it, but you have to stay there so maybe do something with the antenna instead! LOL

Regards//Keith

Look up wave trap on google There is much information there.

What you do is make a tuned circuit (capacitor and inductance)that absorbs the offending signal. you place this in series with your antenna to your receiver.

Hi Serratoga,

Are you able to identify the leaking station? I wonder if it is 21.4 MHz apart from the station that is disturbed.

Sheldon that contraption is cool may have to try it out.
Laszio, I am not sure what station is?
I have been doing more tests and it seems like it is only in one channel the right channel
I can't hear it in the left channel. Is this common?

Only on one channel?
This takes it away from the tuner front end ie the antenna.

I would try switching cables back from the offending speaker and pit it on the other Amp channel. Then if neccessary swap tuner to Amp cables.

Make sure all yoour interconnects are clean you mah have pickup but also there has to be a diode affect to switch RF into Audio

The waqve trap will only work on the RF by attenuating a cetrain frequency.
It should/would not affect only one channel as the signal has not yet been detected and split ino L/R channels.

Small caps from amp input o ground may also help.

But try a bit of diagnosis/elim9ination first

Sheldon after some rigorous tests the leakage is in both channels, it's just more prominent in one channel. I apologize , but for a moment it sounded like it was coming from one channel.
It only happens on the jazz station , no other station has this phenomena? Just my luck my favorite channel has this issue an it did not have this problem on my Pioneer TX-7800.

Curious: is it 91.1 you like or is it the one you do not want?

No that it matters. I liked the station even more when it was CJRT

for the FM band you need oly small inductor and Capacitor

The ARRL hand book( Library?) may have exact design if google does not supply it

You may still be getting pickup from Cables especially speaker,
does it change with moving them?, also it is common for house wiring to pick up RF rdpecially if close to transmitter antenna...CN tower for 91.1.

There are line filters that work for that, you may have to use one on your tuner. Again simply made.

Do you have a lit of appliances plugged on your audio outlet

every wire is an antenna

Hopefully i have given you some ideas
