Default Fostex E16 advice sought

Does anyone have experience of stripping the Fostex E16?
The problem I have is the spring tensioned tape idlers have become stiff and dont return to the rest position without a push. This is having a bad effect on playback speed and when the tape rewinds to the end it wont stop until the tensioners are poked down.
It looks like the front panel needs to come off to get to the pivots but the plastic "head cover" overlaps it, so I am unsure whether to procede as its not my machine. Any guidance would be appreciated.
