There's a chap in the UK who has all the original Decca jigs. I will see if I can dig out his details and post them.

Decibel Hi Fi in Melbourne, Australia bought the Garrott name and rights and offers retipping.
http://www.decibelhifi.com.au/category13_1.htm I have two Decca's , one NOS and one that got the full works. I was lucky enough to actually watch some of the work being done when the late Garrott Bros lived in Avalon many years ago. |

There's not really much to tell. In the mid 80's I knew a guy up on the beaches where I lived who knew the Garrots. When I told him I wanted to get my Decca worked on, he called and we went and dropped it there personally as it was only a short drive. I met the Bros and we discussed what I wanted done, they suggested options and why and we agreed on a spec. I saw one of the brother, IIRC John rewinding a cart and was shown some carts in various stages under the scope and had details pointed out and explained. I also saw the stylii under the scope and got a good look at the detail of the profiles. I also watched them cleaning stlii with fine sandpaper, which was a bit of a shock. It was very interesting and informative and they were polite and answered all my nerd questions. They seemed like nice people, if a little reserved and eccentric (eccentric is good IMO). Got my cart back some time later and my wallet was emptied to an extraordinary degree (quoted price) but I used that cart for many years and got a lot of pleasure out of listening to discs with it, especially once I learned how to get the best from it. EDIT: I posted earlier the Decibel were in Melbourne, but they're actually in Brisvegas. http://www.decibelhifi.com.au/category28_1.htm |
