Question Sowter type 3232

I want to connect Sowter type 3232 as unbalanced to balanced, I guess unbalanced inputs are: White 4 & Pink 6 and balanced outputs are: Green 1, Grey 2 & Brown 3, Black 5 to chassis earth?

Specs: Sowter Type 3232

What exactly are you planning to do there? This is a 10k/10k and would probably not be too happy driving larger amounts of cable capacitance. It is best suited for an input as a balanced to unbalanced xfmr. You could wire it up as a 2:1 (10k/2k5) but then you'd be losing 6 dB of output level.

If you just need a balanced output without the need for transformer isolation, see Jensen appnote AN003 on how to do this most easily. (Actually their other stuff is well worth a read, too.) This yields a properly balanced output but does not give distortion cancellation in a typical active balanced input stage (which occurs with symmetrical driving, as a large portion of common-mode distortion cancels out or does not occur in the first place).

Today I received Brian (Sowter) support:

"Connect Green to unbalanced hot. Brown to unbalanced cold. Leave Grey unconnected. Connect White and Pink to balanced hot and cold (Pins 2 and 3 on XLR). Connect Black to unbalanced cold (Brown)"
