TL072 will latch up if you get the input too close to the power rail. I did that first thing on my first op amp project. Best start out with 5532.

The NE5532 is far superior to the TLO72 in just about every way for audio use, only real exception being the 5532s' relatively large input current spec. The TLO72 has a very limited ability to drive a load, it's prone to latch up if the inputs are overloaded, and has many other "features" that make it undesirable for audio in my opinion.

Peavey uses a lot of NJM4560 which sounds good IMHO and has more drive current than the first two. NJM4580 is used by some pro gear suppliers. I'm using MC33078 which are quieter than the industry workhorse 4558's that I replaced. LM4562 is the latest hot item, in the parts bin but not experimented with yet. All these fast slew rate amplfiers require local ceramic disk power supply decoupling, and a 22-47 pf capacitor around the feedback resistor, to keep them from oscillating. I know because the 33078's were oscillating until I did all that.
