Well, I'm back after going through the nightmare of moving. Then my work prevented access to DIY Audio so I couldn't receive emails and I forgot my password... 
Anyway, I can now dig out the preamp and carry on... Last I remember, I had the rear panel on and was testing but then I dropped the transformer and I daren't use it in case the core is damaged.
I will keep you posted...
