The circuit contains a square-law amplifier. Does this have anything to do with a logarithmic converter?

I am in possession of two quite large mechanical DC meters with 5 decades worth of scale. I am not sure if this kind of square-law amplifier would do it. And since this seems to be the same IC that is used in the eBay VU drivers, I'll be unable to use those either. Or am I wrong?

There is the National Semiconductor Linear Applications Handbook with a logarithmic converter with dynamic range of 80 dB (a fast one) and another with a dynamic range of 100 dB (a slower one). I wonder if there is anything in eBay that would match these circuits.
