Default Left/Right channel balance control

Hello,
I'm looking to create a balance control for Left/Right channel. I have come across this one:

To be honest, I'm not even sure of where I got that from; it works in multisim; but I was wondering if anyone could help me out on the theory behind this, alternatives or whether it even works in reality!

Cheers,

Jon
