say you have 5inputs, not that uncommon and you are on position 2 at the moment.
How many presses to hit position 5? then position 4?

Not at all convenient.

Switch centre off is input A
one side energizes K1 for input B
the other side energizes K2 for input C

K1 right and K1 left can be a dpdt relay or two spdt

same with K2

Does everyone forget the normally closed contacts?

A 2P3T slide switch is fairly easy to find.
The 2 poles are connected on the preamp side; the 3 throws are the different inputs.

2P3T slide is a neat solution! I wonder how I can shoehorn that neatly into/onto 1/16" aluminum plate?

It should come with mounting hardware: machine screws or little nuts & bolts. The downside is it will probably take up a little more space on the backside than a toggle or rotary due to its length.
