Preamp output protection

I have a preamp circuit that will be connected to a class D amplifier. The class D amp has a input voltage up to 5v. I need to limit my preamp from going any higher than this 5v. What is the simplest way to accomplish this? Also, this is a single supply preamp and class d amp.

Back to back zener diodes.

This is a common practice with MOS-FET amps.

Either look at the http://www.passdiy.com or http://www.kk-pcb.com sites to see how it is done with very High End amps.

Don't turn up the volume too high? A bit too much input will cause clipping which is likely to sound horrible long before it does any damage.

Best way is to set the gain in the preamp stage so that with your highest output signal source the output levels don't go above 5V.
