Default Preamp Noise

So right now i'm using an Adcom preamp into a DBX active 2-Way crossover into amps (i forget the model numbers, but i can check later). All is well when using this to run the speakers and sub, but when I plug headphones into the headphone jack of the Adcom preamp, i get a LOT of noise, the noise does not seem to increase in volume as the music volume increases, so i can turn up the volume to drown it out, but that is obviously not desirable.

After messing around with it for a few minutes, i found that unplugging the preamp out cables fixes the problem. So somehow the connection from preamp to active crossover is causing lots of noise in the headphone output of the preamp? this seems very strange, since in my experience i have only had noise from an input, not an output (but my experience is not much).

If anyone has any ideas of what i could do to fix it, they would be greatly appreciated

I guess a question is in order what sort of noise is it? Hiss, Hash (white noise) or hum?

Tony.

The noise sounds like static with a high pitched hum/whine/tone. The noise is not constant, it sounds like some RF interference or something like that. It gets choppy for a few seconds, then holds constant, then the static gets louder, etc, it just keeps varying.

The Preamp is an Adcom GTP-450 and the Crossover is a DBX 223, if that helps at all

Oh, kind of a random question Tony, but, is Wintermute your last name? I'm curious because I have a friend (in southern California) with that last name who has relatives in Australia
