For KP926A SIT transistors
max drain voltage 400V
max gate-source voltage -25V
max drain current 16A
max drain dissipated power (150-Tcase)/2,5 W. At 25degC case temperature it will be 50W
max pulse (10us) dissipated power 250W
These transistors were initially designed for SMPS applications

If I replaced that 15 ohm resistor with 2 seriese connected nicad battery's
the voltage would be about 2.5v which is close enough but would the SIT
draw more than a few ua when the B+ was off ?

I think, more reasonable but complicated solution, if one replace that 15 ohm by 1 ohm 5W resistor, and use regulated additional power supply, that provides from 1 to 5 amps current through the 1 ohm resistor. I have not tried, but some others say it is a good solution.
