Default 2 sources into 1 Stereo

Hi everyone,

I have a Stereo system with an AUX connection (Red & White RCA female) that I plug my desktop computers audio into with a 3.5mm-to-RCA audio Y-cable. Now I got myself a laptop and I'd like to hear the audio from the laptop AT THE SAME TIME as I hear the audio from the desktop through this stereo.

I tried just simply joining the two 3.5mm outputs from the 2 computers together with a 3.5mm Y-connector and then connected that with a 3.5mm-to-RCA audio Y-cable to the stereo's AUX but the volume just got really soft and didn't work properly.

Is there a simple connector I can get (like 3.5mm cable with a diode?) or something similar that anybody has heard of that I can buy for cheap?
Do you know why this doesn't work with the setup I explained? What's going on here to prevent that from working (be as technical as you can in your explanation)?

Thanks for the help guys!

-Mike

Default You need a mixer

You can use resistors and make a passive mixer. Google "passive mixer circuits".

YOU'RE THE MAN!

Ya I found a bunch of cool sites like this 1 http://www.tkk.fi/Misc/Electronics/c...s/linesum.html and this 1 http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/linemixer.html . I guess I could build this myself but I'd rather buy this pre-made... any ideas where I could find something like this pre-made for cheap?

Question Amature build (need technique advice)

Hey guys, thanks for the help!

I built this simple mixer and it really works ! My only concern is my technique, I'm not sure if I did this sort of "by the book" or if there's a better way. Like when I wanted to connect 2 adjacent holes together I just used a pool of solder... is that right? When I wanted to connect 2 holes from across the board I just used a wire under the board and adhered it at the points with loads of solder... is that right?

Anyway here's what the finished project looks like; let me know what you think...

Hi,

Most people would have done it by "hard wiring" it in the case.
That is fitting the sockets and using solid wire and the resistors.

As long as it works how does not matter much.
