That's right. The project is only very whimsical. I don't even know when I am going to the races next - haven't been for about 3 or 4 years.
Practically every time you see a video of a top fuel car running it is just a mass of distortion. It is often loud enough to upset the focus and tracking of some analog video cameras. When you are there live, even with your fingers completely blocking off your ears the sound level pushes your ears well into the non nonlinear zone. I just want to hear what theses things sound like for real.
why not just back off if the dB SPL is too high?

You now need a 100m microphone cable or a very long (and expensive) lens.

Then the sound becomes different because of reflections and whatnot from the surrounding area. I just want to hear pure unadulterated noise, just not too noisy.
