That's right. The project is only very whimsical. I don't even know when I am going to the races next - haven't been for about 3 or 4 years.

Practically every time you see a video of a top fuel car running it is just a mass of distortion. It is often loud enough to upset the focus and tracking of some analog video cameras. When you are there live, even with your fingers completely blocking off your ears the sound level pushes your ears well into the non nonlinear zone. I just want to hear what theses things sound like for real.

why not just back off if the dB SPL is too high?

here is the link to the linkwitz mic - he says it'll swing 5Vpp with 141dB SPL in.

Distance is your friend.

Inverse square law will get the level down to one that is easily recorded.

If it is 153dB at 1m, at 10m it should be 133dB and at 100m down to 103dB. Any decent mike should record that without trouble.

You now need a 100m microphone cable or a very long (and expensive) lens.

Edit: I'm assuming pictures are wanted as well as sound.

Then the sound becomes different because of reflections and whatnot from the surrounding area. I just want to hear pure unadulterated noise, just not too noisy.
