I saw the defaults and this is why I am asking if the software will prevent any output if no programming has been done. But the i/o pins would be different in case of single ended is the default.
I need to look for a remote and teach it first, I wasn't planning using one and this is why I am asking.

@meldano Learned a remote and LED is blinking 4 times for storing the codes.
Verified remote is working, pressing mute on the remote turns on the LED.
Set software to balanced mode via
1. Press key “0” three times (LED blinks 3 times)
2. Press key “8” (for selection bal/unbal mode)
3. Press key “0”
4. Press key “0”
5. Press key “1”
LED confirms saving by blinking 4 times.
Jumpers are set on the volume boards for left/right bal channels.
Boards are receiving power.
Input is 1kHz 1V, balanced.
But nothing on the output.

a) I don't have R5 and R6 on the controller board populated as I am not using the mainboard, right.
The R5/6/7 (X1 pins 8, 9, 10) on the Muses boards for DATA, CLOCK, LATCH... what should I look for?
b) all perfect, done under microscope
c) rotated multiple times (as step is 0.25dB). I also used the IR remote to increase the volume. Checking output on the oscilloscope, input is there but no output, from both boards.

I really want to try and build another balanced set of these but two Microcontrollers failed on me too a while ago. It's expensive to try again. I see lots of people having trouble. Is there any way of sending the ucontroller in better fashion Daniel? They leave you fine but fail once soldered to board even with static precautions.

I didn’t see „lots of people“ having trouble with defective controllers.
Some users have trouble with soldering, the other with muses chip handling.
Most people don't have any problem at all.
The recent issues cannot be attributed to a faulty controller.
It is a little nit tricky to handle the muses chips
But I can ship the controller in an esd package wich icrease the shipping price a little bit.
