A Study of DMLs as a Full Range Speaker

Sorry it's me not making it clear.
The real wood veneer on an old 1940s draw ,peeled off in the damp conditions ,in the shed.
So it's a 1mm thick slice of wood ,not a ply.
Hope this clears things up?

I've had to put an extra layer of 50x50 pva on the panel ,because I used scissors to cut the corners and split the old fragile veneer, hopefully it's ok.
I haven't recorded it yet,well I have but that's when I noticed the problem.
Steve.

I figured out my distortion problem. It wasn't isolation. Like I said before I have the exciters mounted face down so the motor is supporting its own weight. Not good. It was bottomed out. Not sure how to address it but I lifted it back up with some clear tubing. Not sure how this affects the sound and I'm open to other ideas. But it works for now. I was able to move the low pass down to 80 Hz. I can probably get rid of those tissues as the wires don't make noise. 20210624_093800.jpg

Some sort of spine is the usual way to support the exciter weight, which would allow you to attach your cables to.
You mentioned pieces of hose pipe, which you could cut into rings ,in place of o rings ?
This would make a little more room for your spine ,and would be just as easy to hang, with the added benefit of making sure that nothing touching would start vibrating.

ive got a bit of a catch 22 situation with this little veneer panel.
every time i coat the panel in pva it bows heavily , looks more like a propeller !!
which in turn causes more cracks .
im going to try taping it down flat then applying the pva, is there anything similar to pva that does not bow wood?
anyway i do have the first recording i made which was for my own use,so is a bit rough.
when i moved to the back of the room ,i had a large amount of blankets and quilts on my right which heavily damped the room sound ,which is very noticeable when i move forwards to about 3metres and suddenly the room becomes alive again.
but if you turn up the volume in the back position it still sounds pretty good.
the gritty sound in his voice comes across so well ,i am now in love with this track, and similar ones on this CD.
his recordings on this CD are very raw and basic with a lot of distortion used on some tracks, so ive never played it much.
it just happened to fall on the floor as i was trying to clear space at the back of the room, to store my tools.
this is probably the best this panel is going to sound, what with all the pva im having to apply, so i thought i might as well use this recording.
does it need the soft dome in the middle? im not sure, but suspect without a comparison ,that the answer is yes.
not because it needs a dome to produce the high frequency (i have never found ply to be short of HF), but because it helps sort out some of the problems with the exciter and mounting?
hope you enjoy the recording.

Can you explain what you mean by "spine"? I'm not following.

Spedge,
Try coating in PVA from both sides to equalize the wetness from the water based PVA to reduce warping. Use a non water based paint if you don’t want warping. Oil based enamel paint would be one thing to try. Thin it with mineral spirits so it’s not full strength thick stuff.

I have been listening to these tracks a lot to test sound of speakers.

Spine or Bust

This is why I'm a spine only type of guy. I foresee nothing but problems in the long run without one, no matter the orientation.

Originally I did coat both sides but the reverse side is rougher than the front and is more porous .
Over the years this sheet of veneer has absorbed a lot of polish plus whatever it was glued with.
I noticed some bubbling in places,if a gas is escaping this could cause a lot of problems especially under the exciter foot.
I'm going to cover the other side again and hope for the best.
My idea of putting tape around the edges and also weighing them down seems to have worked,I think?
Let's face it it's only a free rough test panel, and it sounds quite promising, so in a way it's been a success, I bet they don't make 1mm veneer anymore, it's probably done in microns ?

It's probably similar in some respects to the panel made by ,I think his name is goebel or something like that?
Steve.
Ps
I'll have a listen to your list when I get time,I'm still supposed to be clearing my room :headbash: :Pinoc:

Ah. I will get to work on this

on the first recording ,take it with me ,i had to lower the volume of the veneer panel as the piano was setting off the problems with splitting and cracking surfaces .
but then i noticed that something else was also distorting , the low frequency from the TLS was causing at least 2 items in the room to start buzzing (still not located ).
so ive had to lower the TLS which only run below 300hz,so his voice does not sound as deep(would you believe )as it would, which i think is much nicer and gives more warmth and closeness ?

the second recording, filipino box spring hog,i recorded to show that i wasnt just playing soft music , because the panel could not handle it.
i had one finger in one ear and turned my head to one side when playing this, and i was well back in the room, as it was quite painfully loud
obviously you do not have to listen to it this loud :D
sorry they are in the wrong order, i had to change ,take it with me , to 128 , as it was too large, even though at my end it said it was not ?

I'm expecting a delivery of 8 balsa basswood sheets today, hopefully?
I've gone for 1.6mm x 300x200mm ,I did look at veneers but it could get very pricy and am not sure which would be best ?
As usual I went for the cheapest and easiest to get hold of total price £11 including postage  :D
It's close to the 1mm veneer thickness and will have the Same sort of flexibility, again, hopefully ?
I think the grain goes across the short edge of the panels but when and If ,I cut them in half to almost match my size of the veneer panel ,the grain will match.
It will be an interesting experiment and comparisons with and without a type of dome material should be interesting too ?
After experimenting with the full sized panel ,that gives me 14 veneer sized panels to experiment with.
I'm sure a few are going to get wasted alone the way.
I just hope the sound is a good match to the veneer panel ,or I've just wasted £11 :bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :bawling:

I will leave the veneer panel as it is now as I don't want to cause any more damage, and it's a good reference.
Steve.
