The Weather

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...it got into the low 40's here this the afternoon -- was in the mid 50's around 11:00 a.m. Planted some geraniums with two grand-daughters yesterday afternoon, but brought most of the other plants into the garage as we might have a frost.

I recall that 40 years ago we planted peas around St. Patrick's day --

It is said if the Gulf stream gets overly diluted Britain will have the climate of Labrador. That is only half true. Both Labrador and UK would be greatly colder. Svalbard whilst not warm is far warmer than places south. If very lucky we might be as warm as the Falklands islands which is not very warm. Iceland more or less. It seems our region of Earth should be in near iceage and it is a quirk that makes it not so. South of Malta the world could get hotter. Malta or Sicilly being a great pace to live regardless, inland a little at about 300 metres up. Saville harder to guess. My guess is New Zealand will remain about the same.

One thing to note. When scientists say the planet is 1C warmer this should be set against a global average of 14.6C. 7% is a lot.

All of this is factoids as not everyone tells the truth. However I much more believe than not believe. If the average high Caribean sea temperature gets to 28C one can think the hurricane season will be spring until autumn. The acidity of the sea is the thing I fear most. As I understand it the bigger improvement we can make is fitting ships with modern engines requiring refined fuels, my guess is a change in injectors might do it for many. If new coal power stations built do the best we can to reduce outputs. This would also make jobs in countries that can still make power stations.

In the UK we make more electricity from wind power than I thought possible. If we build lakes we can store that power for peak demand. It also means we are not controlled by other places when burning gas. UK is now a nett importer of gas and oil. I am 62, I doubt if the newer nuclear ideas will be reality by the time I'm 80. Thorium might. UK has plenty if needed.

16C = 61F 28C = 82F ( more or less and defines sping to summer to autumn in UK ). -40F = - 40C

I suddenly feel very glad to be in Australia and not the Northern Hemisphere. I just hope that we still get lots of rainfall and little drought while the north goes through its mini ice age.

We do know during the last ice age that australia had lots of drought, but we do have groundwater sources now and desalinization plants.

That way we can accept refugees from the nothern hemisphere and still grow megatons of food, housing will be a different story though, you guys had better bring your RV's along with you.

Apparently the reason why we had such a sudden temperature drop last night was because we had an unusually warm April. typically here we have a cold Feb and March but it was unusually warm instead.

The thunderstorm that we had last night was a ripper, it woke both me and my mum up at about 3AM to the sound of roaring rain and lots of thunder and lightning. Then a few minutes later all silent.

At a guess the vast size of Australia means there should always be somewhere to go. If I understand correctly an Ice Age can arrive very quickly. A bit like a mouse trap change. A year or less. In the North it could be global warming that could cause the Mouse Trap if it caused the Gulf Stream to switch off. If that would spread south it is hard to say. It might not, or not as bad. The fact to hold on to is the north is unusually warm compared with the south. 10C is a fair estimate. In the Baltic even.

I will study this as I hadn't thought of areas this high up being ice covered. I suspect climate change people regardless of the real situation are doing the right things albeit for all the wrong reasons perhaps. We can then save the valuable chemicals for another day. The Coral Reefs around many places are dying. I had suggested using Red Sea Coral to replace them. That didn't go down well, that's a tough choice. Let it die or replace with an alien type. Even if we did that we have to halt the process that is killing them. It might give 50 years to do our best.

I would class myself as a skeptic who fully supports the changes. One problem we may face is a shortage of Lithium soon to make batteries. I think water storage of power would help and we can drink it or whatever in times of shortage. OK we can't do both. At least we could plan to have spare capacity. And it makes work.

Yes but very little in terms of broadband coverage, I'm still waiting on Elon Musk to give me 1000mbit internet before I even consider moving into the bushland of NSW. And then there is the ever present risk of bushfires to worry about so pretty much anywhere you go is going to be hazardous, sticking together with a large number of other people is your best bet because then it can be a group effort to fight back/off any bushfire threats and keep backburning going.

You want a dam. One that isn't going to freeze over. A geothermal source perhaps?

Nigel - the 50th North passes through Campbell River on northern Vancouver Island, which on a good summer's day has been known to reach as high as 100F, and being on the not quite wettest part of the coast, averages just under 60" precipitation per year.

Quite a different story from the Kerguelens.

Ain't gonna be no shortage of Lithium:

I suspect it's a good stock market gamble. I seem to remember Bolivia has most. The thing I refer to is if there is a rush to Lithium for storage batteries. You bet the petrol industries circa 1900 thought they had plenty and were even selling their waste product petrol as a new trend. We would be far better off using water if we can. Lithium should recycle quite well.

It seems the old joke that Canada has two seasons Winter and August is slightly true. In the near Arctic lands I heard it's 3rd week in May as spring. When it comes it can be quite hot ( 82F 28C ). The Canada joke forgets the massive grain harvests. We would be in trouble if it changes. I think I noticed some of Alaska is at the UK position, even Oxford. I told a friend Ibiza should be OK if the worse happens.

Chile has the world's largest deposits of lithium -- and there is more prospecting for lithium than any other mineral. If there's going to be a throttle on EV development it will be cobalt which is largely mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo. (Some cobalt is obtained from nickel mining, but the yield is only a few percent.)

Lithium is difficult to recycle, at least by current methods.

don't panic ! - for our beloved semiconductors, on the proper scale (Kelvin) it's really only 1degree out of 287.6degrees which is 0.3% :D

In Ontario, there are indeed only two seasons, winter and construction. But we have a psuedo season too. At the end of winter it oscillates rapidly between winter and construction, the average is Spring.

Today it's the never ending winter the UK gets. It can be very warm in winter here. Problem is it's always a warm winter year round. The length of day being the difference mainly. At least I got some PCB work done. Now to put a bottle of wine in the fridge as I have had enough of placing components for today. New Zealand Brancott Estate. I suspect NZ will be the safer place to live from all points of view 50 years from now. That is regardless of climate changes. What happens in the North ( UK ) shouldn't be duplicated in the South ( NZ ). I could imagine 10C change in the UK being 2C in NZ. If so wine production could move south if wanting a similar climate.

My goodness the Sun has come out! At least the grass is looking good.
