Thanks a lot for the detailed post. I would like some bass in this thing. I am going to search out your suggestions on speakers. I decided not to build this in a tube. I am going to make a box as small as I can and leave enough room for everything to fit.

well if you nominate a maximum box size that you can accept, then it will make it easier to suggest drivers, if you're also interested in keeping the weight down, then I would suggest something with a neodymium magnet, that will be more expensive, but you will be glad every time you have to lift it.

In my latest build I tried a separate bluetooth and it wasn't any better than the integrated ones. But it's always a bit of a raffle with these chinese cheap amps and stuff, and sometimes they require some modifications to be usable, like lowering the gain. That's a common problem.

That amp looks good, I would go for it (at the moment I'm trying to think something that I would need it for, because I wan't to try it :D)

And a subwoofer is a nice addition, that JBL mentioned is suprisingly sensitive, might be a good choice. But the more speakers, to more they draw juice from your battery, so you'll need a big one.

I think in this case I would go for 6S LiPo, at least 10 000 mAh. Like this one:
404 not found
With that, you can get the most out of that amplifier, and you'll go a long time with it. It's also quite small and lightweight, but the downside is the charging, because you need a smart charger for it.

...What is the 5kHz x-over used for and is this it? Also what are you going to use for a battery pack? Are these the tweeters? Those things look small which is good. I want to keep the box small.
Yes, that is a crossover and I use those tweeters.
x-over = crossover see Introduction to designing crossovers without measurement
I use an old laptop battery (12V, 3x18650 in serie) or 1 or 2 (12/24V) lead acid batteries, but have to fix something else. You can use ebike or tool batteries with or without step up/down convertor to. I'm going to put 2x 18V drill batteries in parallel if I haven't found anything better before summer starts.

Make sure your wires are thick enough and that you have a (car?) fuse close at the + terminal to prevent fire from a shorting wire.

Well to get this down to a smaller size is there any decent subs that are 4"? I was just laying out a box. The one in this picture is 14" wide by 10" tall and I would make it how ever deep I need to have room for a battery in there. I would have to make it taller to house a sub that was 8". I am open to any ideas for the layout as I am not sure. The speakers are 3.3 inches and the tweeters are 3 1/4" x 1" and the amp is about 4" x 1"

Better read about these planar tweeters before buying; you have to rotate them 90 degrees and then the horizontal dispersion will be great but the vertical dispersion is very narrow; speakers have to point to ear height. You are probably better of with some domes if you want tweeters at all.
When riding your bike, the highs will suffer from riding wind. The highs from the Visatons FRS 8M are ok for when riding your bike.
A 4" sub won't give much output. Better look for a 8" car sub which likes to live in a small box.

A car sub is a box within a box (the car), which is how you can get away with a small subwoofer box, on a bike you don't have the benefit of a car's 'cabin gain', so it is futile chasing a response lower than 100Hz.

I'd say skip the sub, and in fact the tweeter, go fullrange, but with 2 drivers aside, the benefit of this is that,if you wire them in parallel you half the impedance of the speakers, and so double the amp's power capability, and because you double the surface area you get 6dB more efficiency, that will make for a very loud system.

So let's say you get 4 of these
FaitalPRO 4FE32 4" Neodymium Professional Full-Range Woofer 8 Ohm
you end up with a nominal 97dB/w sensitivity for a speaker weight of 2.5lbs

OK, I think I am back to trying to build this thing somewhat small for my bike. Using an amp and 2 speakers and battery all inclosed in a cabinet. Will this amp still be a good choice if I don't add the bass speaker or should I go back to one of the other ones. I like that this one has volume and treble nobs on it all though not sure it is necessary. As far as speakers go, I would like to use a pair of 3 or 4"ones if that is possible to still get some good sound and decent volume. Some speaker options have been suggested throughout this thread:
peerless-by-tymphany-830987-3-full-range-woofer
visaton-bg17-8-65-full-range-speaker These are 6.5"
visaton-frs8-4-33-full-range-speaker-4-ohm
faitalpro-4fe32-4-neodymium-professional-full-range-woofer-8-ohm

I found this setup someone made. Mine doesn't have to be this small but I like the layout. I would have to have a bigger battery too as it looks like he is only getting about 4 hours out of it.

I think down the road I am going to build a nice boombox for the garage with the bass speaker.

The amplifier link doesn't work, but if you refer to the 2.1 amp, then no. If you use two speakers, use a 2 channel amp, if there's no load on the third channel of the 2.1 amp, you will blow up the chip.

Here's one amplifier you could use, I used similar in my first boombox. As you can see, all the extra knobs up the price a bit. But it's a decent amplifier, a little hiss and interference from the BT-module but otherwise OK.

And to narrow down the driver list, I think you can forget the 6,5" visaton, even one of those requires a big enclosure to get some lower notes, about 10-20 liters. I think you are qoing for a smaller one.

I've heard that these are also quite capable drivers (not made anymore though):

AuraSound NS3-193-8A 3" Extended Range Driver 8 Ohm

And here's the replacement:

Dayton Audio ND90-8 3-1/2" Aluminum Cone Full-Range Neo Driver 8 Ohm

I made a quick test with the DA, and wow... that small thing really has impressive cone excursion :D

Still deciding on the knobs or go without. I will be streaming from my phone using poweramp which has a built-in equalizer. Are the knobs really even nessasary streaming this way? The speakers seem like they would be perfect.

What size battery do you think it would take to get maybe 8 hours out of it. These speakers have some great reviews and they seem like they would be perfect.

I don't know, depends on how loud you want it of course.
But for me, all my picnic/camping and bicycle audio needs are now met by this amp:
Nobsound NS-10G 100W Bluetooth 4.0 Power Amplifier Stereo Hi-Fi Bass Digital Amp | eBay
...and power tool batteries from supermarket chain Aldi, they are 20V (measure 21.7V fresh) come in 2Ah and 4Ah, I have yet to measure actual capacity, but I know that I can listen to good volume for about 6h before I feel the need to swap batteries, that's with the 2Ah version. The new version of these batteries now come with a capacity readout in per cent, after you press a button, which is very useful.

It's not as elegant as a one box solution, and the amp is not the most efficient at low volume, but it just works really well together. And yes I have tried all sorts of combinations of amps, bluetooth receivers and batteries.

It's quite difficult to tell you exact figures about the battery requirements, because there are so many variables. And I don't have any accurate measurements about my boomboxes, but I'm guessing the one with TPA3116 and 4S 6Ah LiPo with those 6,5" Visatons can go over 10 hours. In that I have the amp board with the knobs, haven't really used the treble but the bass adjustment comes in handy if you really wanna go loud.

So do you need a special charger for one of those batteries?

I saw a boombox someone made and it looked like he had made some sort of mount for the battery so the battery just slid into place. How did you hook up one of these batteries to your amp?

Are you sure about that? Why would that be? Link with more info please.

@topicstarter: The most advisable system is a trade off of size/weight/loudness/cost/quality/your own preferences/etc.

Is there a system that suit your needs or you think that might suit your needs to use as a reference?

This is the amp I was refering to. I am open to suggestions on amp and speakers. I am wanting to stay somewhat compact. It needs to be small enough to carry on my bike rack which is over my back tire. I am just going with two speakers the amp and battery all in one case. I would like decent sound and be able to crank it up when I want. I need a battery to last probably close to 8 hours, longer would be better. I would think the box could be 12-16 inches long and maybe 6 inches square.

I sure appreciate eveyones ideas.

Like this :

I did repurpose a battery charger as an amp house with bluetooth and a voltage meter, but I had a lot of trouble getting rid of noise, so this is a lot more compact, and dead quiet.
