True that but I also can't think of any society or country that was ruled by an aristocracy which was not headed by a monarch.
Can you?

Or many monarchies which did not depend on the rest of the aristocracy for their power.
It wasn't just in England either: The emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation for example was elected by (part of) the aristocracy.
French king Louis XIII was not the most powerful man in France, it arguably was Cardinal Armand du Plessis, Duke of Richelieu.
I could go on but the list would probably include every european monarch for the last thousand years.

I would agree that Queen is the same ranking as King however the Holy Roman Emperor counted a number of kings as his subjects like the King of Bavaria or the King of Bohemia.
The King of Bavaria ranked lower than the Count Palatine of the Rhine, the Duke of Saxony, the King of Bohemia or the Margrave of Brandenburg as these were the ones who elected the next emperor together with the archbishops of Trier, Mainz and Cologne. So here we have hereditary aristocrats who had a higher rank than some kings and queens.

Also Queen Victoria was made Empress of India with a large number of Maharajas (translation: great kings) as her subjects. Rumour has it she picked this title because her daughter was to become Empress of Germany and so would have outranked her.


The more I think about it the less sense it makes to separate monarchs out of the aristocracy.
I would appreciate a logical explanation why there should be this separation.
