Frugel-Horn Mk3

I am currently in an apartment and they're currently in a 10' x 14' room in the corners of the short side.
I think my Maggie tube amp puts out around 15wpc (?) I only ever play material through tape or records essentially. Sometimes my roommate hooks up his iPod but whatever.
I generally don't listen at high volumes because its an apartment

I haven't ever really heard this type of music in a high five setting. I'm used to listening through a pair of Polk Monitor 7's. I also had some JBL L77's that I sold because I liked the Polks more.
I would assume I'm looking for something dynamic and energetic but I think I prefer a little darker tonality in general. I'm not sure if these things can coexist haha
Thanks for the help guys

Morning!!

I just roughed one together yesterday for my 108EZ's...I have to say quite positive!!

Don't expect a lot of bass but they do work very well :)

I've only had the drivers for a week...previous owner said they were not quite broken in yet...not sure how much they will smooth out over time...

The FH3 was a huge improvement over a TQWT that I had them in but was fashioned up for another driver...it was close to BIB dimensions that was designed for the 108EZ so I just ran them in there for a taste...not optimal but better than just an OB...

My wife even noticed how much better the FH3 brought out the vocals...and with Dave's help I got some stuffing going in there to make them even more so!!!

Maybe Dave has some more tweaks for them?? LOL!!

i had few newbie questions related to mk3. what is the size of the most acceptable driver, is it 5". will a 4" work too. what do i get by going to a higher size and whats the max size that is advisable? i was just exploring some vintage full range (electro-voice) speakers and found some 12" drivers on flebay.

... what are the implications of reducing the depth of the base from 17 inches to 12

They will no longer be Frugel-Horns -- you are on your own. Likely lessbass and more ripple.

An Irish firm has completely removed the final part of the mouth after the choke and it seems to work OK (at least according to the review)

Not recommended - if floor space is at a premium, a smaller footprint design, such as Pensil or the compact floorstander "Ken" would perhaps be a better choice.

The A10P or 10.3 work very well in MLTL or the compact floorstander

Pictured below are FHXL, FH3 and A10P floorstander in side view.

As much as I love the placement flexibility and WAF of the smaller designs, there's no doubt that with the Alpair and other FR drivers in this size range that size does make a difference.

yes, they can be tippy - outrigger bars or flat plate approx 14" wide works well

The depth and shape of the rear mouth are entirely functional, ans as I've said before if the footprint of the FH3 or XL is awkward, either the Pensil or Dave's compact floorstander are worth consideration.

You would need toclimb into Scott's head for that.

A thought to give anyone nightmares. :D

Another question, what are the implications of reducing the depth of the base from 17 inches to 12. The reason i ask is that it give me more flexibility in their room placement

What Dave & Chris said. Major: it's functional, not decorative. If you want to do that, I'd suggest a different design, e.g. their compact floorstander, a pensil (depending on driver) or similar.

thoroughly unimpressed

I thought that would get your attention. Let me say first that I am sure any shortcomings of these speakers is a direct result of something I have done wrong. That being said, I have to admit I expected a little more. A little history... a few years ago I picked up a pair of Solo 103's at goodwill for 3 bucks. One day I stumbled upon plans for Zigmahornets. I spent very little time and money to throw together a pair and when I fired them up for the first time, my jaw hit the floor. I was obsessed. I couldn't believe that such a natural full sound could be coming from this tiny radio shack speaker. Sure the bass is lacking and I run a sub but the mids and highs are nothing short of magial. Naturally I had to have more. Enter the MK3. I poured over the forums and set out to build a pair. I chose the chp-70 based on recommendations and it's low price. I realize the 7.3 is probably the driver of choice and i'll save my pennies for a pair, but I just gotta believe these can sound better. Where do I start? The highs are terrible and they just seem lifeless. Help me find that "magic" I know is lurking in there.

coopercustoms,

I am guessing that you have the CHP-70.2 - which would have a more "vintage" sound with rolled off highs...

Have you listened to the drivers in free air? How do they sound? How many hours do you have on the drivers?

Also how have you lined/stuffed your FH3?

Sorry, lot of questions - but more info will help folks to give suggestions.

Btw, your build looks very nice - hope forum members can help you find the sound you are looking for.

The CHP70.2 has a top end (top 2 octaves) shelved down 10 dB or so (and a peak just before that). We added a tweeter to it, but it really needs a better XO than i implemented. Scott in his Jennas does use an elaborate XO that is much lower then mine.

I got email from one fellow that removing the dustcaps freed up the HF. (he was looking for phase plugs, i didn't have any, but they are easy enuff to cobble together).I haven't tried it so i don't know.
