speaking of the Eagles - this is actually quite decent:

When I first looked at the list of artists, I thought... not for me. I have always argued with people who call the Eagles "country", and I am not particularly interested in hearing "country" singers sing Eagles songs.

However, then I read the following summary on Amazon and I am very intrigued:

In 1993, Nashville's biggest young stars--Alan Jackson, Trisha Yearwood, Vince Gill, and others--recorded an album of Eagles songs called Common Thread. When the disc went platinum, everyone hailed it as the rebirth of country-rock. If you listened closely, though, you heard neither the down-to-earth twang of country nor the metallic aggression of rock & roll. What you heard instead was the romantic sweetness of pop. More specifically, the Eagles represented the southern California pop tradition of harmony-drenched groups like the Beach Boys, the Mamas & the Papas, and Crosby, Stills and Nash. It's a wonderful tradition, but it's misleading to call it something else.

And if chrisb says it isn't bad, then I must give it a try. :)

This is a killer track, for system testing, sourced from a proper digital file, of course - should be able to do this at full volume, with total clarity, opening up a huge soundspace - this is orgasmic listening at its best, :D ... in particular, the drums at the end of the track should be absolutely magnificent!

Yeah, anything Skyhooks is great stuff, pure aussie gold.
They were way ahead of their time, at the time....the musicianship, the showmanship, the costumes, the attitude.....
Very, very sad that Shirl died in a 'copter crash.
If the whole band were still around they would be crankin' in it in the pub circuit big time, no doubt.
Never got to see them live... :sad:.

Yep, local talent does it - I was not into the Oils at the time, but very recently heard this, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, being played on a system which was in excellent shape for it to come across properly. Absolutely remarkable album, some brilliant production concepts in it - it blew me away, a real musical feast ...
Back in the day, I had it on vinyl, and so did everybody else I knew.
Never really loved it, but I do recall the production was good.
Time to go back and take another listen !.

MT and PM are good friends, and have told me many stories of those days.
One was when they turned up to record the album, the studio white coats wanted to record as per usual methods (multi tracking)
The band's answer was nope, we're recording live.
The band had been touring live for the past year and had all the songs down pat, so the album went straight to tape, with most songs in a single take.
Or so I am told...

You mean you haven't seen them live :eek:....I forget how many times I have seen them over east, and here in the west....always, always great shows.
Do yourself a favour and break your balls to get to their next nearby concert before it's all too late !!!.

35 years ago, a mate turned me onto the TTB album.
It immediately became my very favourite record too, and a damn good reference/system test recording also.

......One day I went to the repairs shelf and grabbed the next job...a green bullet harmonica mic.
I looked at the job card...Matt Taylor...no way, get effed...I'm holding a piece of Aus blues history !.
As later luck would have it, Matt turned up at another repair shop I worked for and we got talking....that turned into me being his personal tech support and evolved into good friendship.
It's funny how wishes come true...and I even got to hold the mounted Gold Record copy of TTB !.
......My GF and I gave him a lift to the Bridgetown Blues Festival....10 hours with Matt in the back seat and you get to hear some interesting stories of the 60's/70's !.

My brother was/is heavy into that world - when he was a youngster I bought him his first guitars from an opportunity shop, built him that classic Electronics Australia 60W valve guitar amp, and speakers in the chipboard box; he played at the country town golf club, and finally managed to get on stage at a couple of the iconic Sydney hotel rock venues ... and he's still doing it! Teaching music to the youngies these days, once it's in your blood ...

Been there in that room, those sounds are captured quite well.
Have you had a good listen to TTB's...the drum solo on Albert Gooses is impressive, and Phil's guitar solos are magical.

Phil used to play at the Storey Bridge Hotel in Brisbane every Thursday night....Coopers on tap and world class guitarist, no cover charge.....fixing electronics on Fridays was often a very loooong day !.

Bo Diddley Beat and Dole Queue Shuffle Blues are great humour, his renditions of a bunch of blues standards are better than the originals.

The crowd sounds add that completeness....aaahhh the fond memories :cool:.
This download is a dub from a damaged cassette...your system is musically up to the task of that 'being there' experience, please revel as I did on that particular night.
Phil is a maestro....Chet Atkins does some stuff playing two tunes at once, Phil does it better !.

Search YouTube for his stuff, in particular footage of his performances on Murray River paddle boats....intimate and beautiful.

PS - Just goes to show what can be captured with an SM58, a stomp box, a Takamine and a Fostex cassette four track....and a great guitarist.
