Thanks a lot for all your replies, good stuff..!..As I stated, I'm mainly gonna be using the 7.3/A7 combo basically for tracking/mixing at a relatively moderate level ( no hardcore bass involved..;)..)..I'm after good reference sounds for balanced, etc..I'm gonna look more into the TPA3116 amp. For that price, it's worth the look anyway..Thanks!

you mean a $10 amp?

For what it's worth, I've been through TA2020, TK2050, TDA7498E and TPA3116. The TPA3116 has the smoothest top end -- the tubiest sound. I like to use amps that are in the 30W/ch range. Pretty much guarantees that your ears will give out before the amp clips.

Bob

I've been enjoying your M12-165s for a while now but as summer approaches I find my EL34 tube amp adds too much heat to to room so I'm looking for a "summer" amp.

Are you talking about an amp like this: Yuan Jing Audio - ON SALE! - TPA3116 Class-D Stereo Amplifier Board [50W+50W] - $9.99

Thank, Mack

Hi snatchman

if you havn't committed yet then this is a consideration:

I have a YJ blue board which I'm fiddling with and the ready built is way smoother in my experience, right out of the box. I gave a small description on the tpa3116 thread in classd forum.

so far I've tried them with:

alpair 10.2 reflex monitor
fostex 206 tqwt
quad esl63
er audio esl3
TB w5-1611 sealed monitors

the one shown in the link has been great in all the configs I've tried, highly recommend it. I had some reservations about the Yj board before it's modded.

Hello..I may have asked this question already.... but, where can you get this amp already assembled in the US..?

You can't, not yet anyhow. Ordering straight from YJ has been a pretty good experience from most folks who have done it. About 7 days to 10 days.

You can get the TPA3118D2, fully built and ready to go for about $50 from Amazon. Search for the SMSL pro 36A amp. The 3118 is same chip but uses conduction to PCB for heat sink so cannot handle as much power. It is good for 20 watts though.

There are a number of D amps out there... my head is spinning with all those numbers. TPA3116D2, TPA3123, TPA3118, TDA2030, TK2050, TDA7492, etc...

And I see a number of them adding a sub out as well, in 2.1 configuration. For example, this one (in Chinese, but I'm sure you guys can see the numbers and pictures ok) shows a 50W+50W plus a 100W for sub.

How do I go through this sea of products to find a good one?

I'll post impressions..

Any suggestion on power supply?

any particular reason for resistance to order from offshore? I had a great experience with the YJ purchase.
Hello..Good question..My reason: I'm new to this so I worried that ordering offshore may result in some mishap in ordering info and result in getting wrong product ( mostly it'll be my fault..:D..)..At least state side, it'll be less hassel at correcting the problem (ie shipping,etc.)..Anyone here in the States put these kits together for other less competent guys as myself..?....Thanks..

well, I guess it depends on whether it's the driver's Revc or instantaneous value of impedance with complex waveforms represented in the musical signal that determines the load the amp "sees"

note that the Revc for both A7.3 and A7P is listed as 5.4 Ohms, which on the published curve of impedance vs frequency is the minimus for 7.3, while the value for 7P never drops below 8 - I'm not sure if that's something to be concerned or confused about.

well, actually, I am certain about my confusion

BTW...The power output is rated at 50 wpc @ 4 ohms, correct? What would the power output equate for an 8 ohm driver such as the Alpair 7.3..?.( which I'm planning to use)

The data sheet is here:
http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/slos708c/slos708c.pdf

Look at Fig 10 which shows Max power of 8ohm load as 30watts for a 24v supply before distortion jumps. If Re is 5.4ohms, you are probably good for close to 40watts.

A fair comparison at minimum will require that the cheap $15 TPa3116 have real brand name power rail caps installed. Panasonic OSCON 330uF 25V SEPF is the current favorite at $1.80ea. The cheap electrolytic caps that come standard often limit performance. If you do that you will most likely find that this amp can beat most amps in the same power category out there. I have also heard that it sounds better than many pro rack amps like Crown, Alessis, and it is better sounding than any TKxxxxx or TDAxxxxx.

At the risk of adding more confusion by throwing out yet another part number: Sure tpa3110 2x15Watt board. Note that Sure makes two tpa3110 boards; the one I linked is a newer one and slightly more expensive ($15 versus $10 USD). Parts Express sells the old version, but you can buy the new one from Sure direct on Ebay.

I mention this because you talk about mixing, which I assume is a nearfield application. I have A7.3-based bookshelf monitors on my computer desk, powered by the Sure tpa3110. When all eight electrolytic caps are changed out for the OSCON caps, the sound is (to me) better than all the tpa3116 amps I've played with (and I've sunk an embarrassing amount of time and money into those!).

The tpa3110 is a close cousin to the 3116, but it is lower power. Consider the Alpair 7 is about 85 dB at 1m with 1watt of power... and by my back-of-the-envelope estimates, I'm pretty sure I've never put much more than 1watt into my A7s. So, if you don't need the power, and don't need something pre-assembled out-of-the-box, I recommend the (new version) of the Sure tpa3110 board.

New TPA3116D2 amp from SMSL

I just found out that SMSL now makes a boxed version of the 3116 with external heatsink called the SA-60 which is good for more power relative to the 3118. It has great components, and one of the few boards to have nice copper air core inductors, and the much desired "bootstrap snubber" circuit. May be the best values in great sounding pre-built amps. $80 on Amazon with free shipping.
