Stereo Integrity HT 15" D2.... 8' tall tapped horn.

In the spirit of "more is better" and "too much is not enough" I built a tapped horn out of a Stereo Integrity HT15D2.

8' Tall

~220lbs.

And capable of a ton of clean output.

It took just under three sheets of plywood to build. All joints are screwed and glued with a glue cleat on every joint. There are a series of braces running front to back so there's never more than ~6-8 inches of un-braced panel with the exception of the mouth.

In testing, at 30Hz in the garage I stopped at roughly 14 watts of the 1400 available because I thought the garage door was coming off the rollers.

I created some filters using the simulated output of the horn to flatten the response a bit, and given the silly excursion of the woofer (it can't be bottomed using the bash amp in free air) I put in some 20Hz boost before the 15Hz cut.

The result is the first time I can honestly say I've ever heard truly effortless bass. For music, or HT use at any level that won't get the cops called on you (and even some that will) I can only feel a few mm of travel on the woofer. This on a woofer that's rated for 22mm linear one way XMAX and roughly double that for mechanical. I would be afraid of losing a window.

At high output putting your head near the mouth of this thing is a bit like getting a demo from a car that can do a "hair trick".

COOL! - my ceilings are around 7'10" at best - what existing diy TH designs would fit my room height?
This could be re-folded to roughly 4' in height but it would be over 30" deep. If you study tapped horns and tapped horn folding long enough you'll see patterns. I had a very limited depth to work with...I couldn't give up the square footage. So I went up.

Out of curiosity, could you post any drawings of the enclosure you might have? I currently have an old Adire Audio Shiva serving as my music and HT sub. It works great, but I'm considering a new sub build just for fun and tapped horns seem like they'd be an interesting project.

Thanks.

The LAB 12 driver is just a bulletproofed early Avatar/Adire Shiva, so should work well enough in its various TH designs, though may not can handle as much power, which for HIFI/HT probably isn't an issue.

GM - sorry, I wasn't very clear in my earlier post. I'm not intending to reuse the old driver, rather construct a new sub. I had been considering either the CSS SDX12 or Dayton Ultimax, but the Stereo Integrity subs look interesting as well (especially for the price). Hence my curiosity on how Scott had designed his TH.

Ah! Yeah, after seeing this, I wondered about it in a DSL DTS10 type of TH and it looks really good at 115 dB/11 Hz/1 pi/600 W/~453 L net if it can take the ~3.34:1 CR, which I doubt, but then room gain will help at least 3 dB, so should be able to handle ~300 W good enough.

Sorry, guys didn't mean to be quiet, didn't realize there were replies to the thread. I think my spam filter has been a bit over-active. Really, I have very little in the way of plans. It's a simple single fold with a constant expansion. You decide your width and that decides your depth. Or you decide the depth and that decides your width. The height of the thing is dependent on the pipe length.

I looked at both of these drivers...both can be made to work. The SI had the best combo of performance, cost, and cabinet size for me.

Yeah, I'd worry about a Shiva in a TH with a compression ratio of ~3.3. This one clocks in at 2.0 which isn't that bad, and with the autosound heritage of Stereo Integrity I wasn't too worried...they know how to build sub-woofers that can withstand some abuse. I considered the Obsidian Audio drivers as well, but they were sold out.

The original 'Basslist' Shivas I have can handle the high CR at 300 W in a HIFI app, but I was referring to the SI driver, which with its high half roll surround would probably distort too much at high power and compression, especially since it's a ~10 Hz alignment.

GM

The SI surround is actually quite thick and not near as floppy as I would have thought. I still wouldn't run them at a CR of 3+, but mine at 2 is just fine at pretty insane output levels.

Finally got around to videoing a high power experience....

8' Tall, Stereo Integrity HT15D2 Tapped Horn Sub..... - YouTube

Sharp eyed viewers will notice the whole 240+ lb sub moving itself on its casters at 25 seconds.

They will also notice I'm using my Federal jury summons as the demo paper. (sigh)

Usually, the following disclaimer (or something like it) is reserved for car audio. Any distortion you hear is objects rattling, including windows, mini-blinds, AC ducts, computer cases, the paper flopping about, or microphone overload and kittens. It's not the sub distorting....the amp I'm using for the demo can only provide 33% of the power needed to hit xmech for this driver.

Yup. There's more in the tank.

The SI website has some measurements on their plans at the bottom of their page:
Stereo Integrity | HT Subwoofers
but they don't particularly specify an inward-facing cutout.

Looking at the roll surround relative to the rear mounting face (which it would rest on if mounted 'normally') I think the recommended cutout size is fine, and Nick at SI told me the same by email when I was asking about the 18s.

I can confirm for sure in a few weeks, hopefully, when my boxes are built! :)

hey SpeakerScott -- what diameter cutout did you use for your HT15D2? - got a BP4 project which needs rear mounting to make it easier to load the driver and the rubber surround must clear under power.

I don't remember the exact hole size I used. It's a tight fit though...and yes I used the supplied gasket. I think the surround is slightly wider than the frame cutout...so I would measure your drivers.
