It may be that you need to adjust laser current downwards, as Mooly suggested.
Already done that. There are no differences between 520mV and 620mV. If adjusted even below that range, no CDs will be played
There is no viable eye-pattern when CDs are not read.
We're lost. You have a big difference on 6212 pin1 between CD and CDR, but no other clues. That may not be significant anyway because the measurements are not under the same conditions.
You wouldn't get a normal eye pattern on the lead-in or TOC anyway, but comparing whatever you get with CD and with CDR might be useful.
As I understand it, test mode B part 1 works OK for both, but part 2 only works for CDR. So focus and spin speed are OK but it won't track with a CD. The AGC in the tracking error circuit increases gain considerably when tracking a CDR, and reduces gain to near or at the limit of its range when trying to track a CD.
The eye pattern is of the correct amplitude for a standard CD when playing a CDR. However, the manual only gives a single value rather than a range, so 1V may be a minimum value. Neither do we know how the levels of CDR and CD would compare if it played both.
If you compare CD and CDR eye patterns, and 6212 pin1 values, using your CDX, that will almost certainly be useful.
Other than suggesting you check all components in the tracking error processing section, I'm flummoxed.
This thread wasn't the best place to ask the question perhaps, because we really need someone who's heard of this particular problem. Maybe a new thread, entiled maybe "CD104 reads CDRs but not CDs", would attract more attention?

Hi,
The CD104 is fixed.
The TCA240 was (partly?) fried and the laser focussing coil was misaligned.
Why did it play CDRs is still perplexing, but it seems that properly burnt ones are easier on CD players than Redbook CDs after all! The truth is, I've often wondered why playing CDRs made my CD players more silent...
It now works perfectly, with its original components on the decoding board.

I have been given a nice looking philips CD104. Of course, not working.
Just finnished working 2 days on the dead CD104/60.
Completely rebuilt the powersupply unit. All new regulators and capacitors.
Then rebuilt the decoder board with new capacitors and got rid of the griplets
Then did the same for de servo board. Then found out that the wiring was not ok. Still 6 broken connections found..... Rebuilt all the wiring and checked each connection for continouity. Nice job.
Only then she would do something. Yeah, the tray controller board bruned up. Not nice. Found out that someone else has been hobbying. The tray controller board was in discreet components only. This board was not in the service manual which goes to version 30 (CD104/30) Mine was /60. After reading all the posts last night (took a few hours.....) found out that the schematics for this tray controller are in the manual of the CD304. Printed it and replaced all the burned transistors. Again checked all components of this board only to found resistor 3811 was broken. Replaced this also.
At the end all is wel, but the micro controller does not work. It seemed to be fried. No display and the tray motor stays running and the discs stays spinning. I can hear the laser focussing and then stabilizing. Replaced the tray in switch by a better microswitch.
When I remove the controller nothing happens. I think it is the controller which is broken: MAB8440P-D061.
Can anybody help me with this?
I would like to get this cd player up and running.
Marc

Found a "new" secondhand µcontroller, put it in and "voila" CD player up and running.
Has been playing for 2 hours straight. No problems, superb sound, instant reaction of the player to commands.
I'm happy.
Thanks guy's, I haver learned a lot reading through these pages!

Does anyone knows of malfunction in 104 such this: MasterOn-sometimes the tray opens too.
Motor winds for the fraction of second then stops. Error LED is blinking. Everything followed the power failure in the room. Yet 104 is connected in AC via protection box with proudly lighten LEDs (GROUND OK, PROTECTION OK). Or if you know in this thread of 83 pages that someone had similar problem...? Any help or course ofaction please.

I have one cd100 but failured in function,I took the cpu mba8840 from working cd104 for test but nothing change, then I put the cpu normal to cd104,now the cd104 no function for play,it spin two times after play button was press, any suggestion about this,I thought the cpu was damaged by cd100,it was hard to find the same cpu on ebay ! help !
uP's are always always always the last suspects.
Also the "base" number of any uP is simply the unprogrammed device, for dedicated processors you need the correct programme version.
If you have removed a working uP from a player and then refitted it back and now the player is non functional then it can only be,
a) The processor has been damaged.
b) You have refitted it incorrectly or caused some other problem in the removal or refittment of it.
I know that's not what you wanted to hear but that is unfortunately the reality of it.

May I use the uP from another cd104 but different base nos.Because I found the uP on cd100 was totally different from manual, the manual circuit of cd100 was mAB8420p but found the real nos.at cd100 was MAB8440P with base nos.
So I made a mistook for uP exchange from cd104 !

If its from the same model you would have to just try it and see. There is a good chance it would be OK and work. Sometimes changes are made in production to overcome a specific issue and a different or updated uP (or its programme) is installed.
Only way to know would be to try it.

Hi all,
I have a Marantz CD44 which is another version of the CD104. It had strange problem from yesterday. It spins all the time, counterclockwise, whenever I turn it on. It still spins even when the tray is eject/close. When I press play, it stops, spins clockwise for some seconds, then spins counterclockwise again and cannot play any track.
My DIY skill is zero, I opened the cover but don't even know how to take the control board out to treat the griplets. Is there anyone in Canberra Australia can guide me how to repair this machine. I just don't want to junk it.
Thanks
Truong
