Sorry for the late reply, i tested my friend's XMOS+PCM5102 combination just this morning in my hifi system. The test DAC was totally USB-powered.
I have to say i don't agree with dhbiker: to my ears, my Xonar STX with 49990 opamps sound is clearly more convincing. ...

Hi there

LME49990 has different sound signature than LME49720 and also it depends on the system you listen on.

that's why you will never get the "true" information you want, also we humans hear sound differently from each other/ have different taste :D

anyways not trying to start anything just my 2 cents on your quote ;)

That's OK, i just wanted to share my experience :)

low latency button trouble

Hi all,

I bought a Joro's combo, xmos + PCM5102.
I don't understand how I can change between FIR and IIR philter.
I know that standard state is FIR filter, and there is a 'button' to change the state.
I don't understand how to use this button (there are two holes, it is not really a button), nor how I can see wich status (FIR/IIR) is now running. Is there a led?

Can someone help me?
Tia.

switch = is located near configuration jumpers, on the other side (up face)
Led = is marked F near 1 to 4 pins

use the picture from first page of AK4396 board.

If you push one time the switch the led will go off and the filters are changed.

If you long push the switch the DAC will go to sleep mode and the led will blink.

Hi there,
joro's combo just arrived, with both DACs.

I can play superlatively HiRes FLAC, but I can't play DSF files (no sound and no LED on board). I am missing something in my configuration. I know it's OT, can someone point me where I could get some info?
Thanks,

Marco

There's no switch, my board is the pcm5102 one.

Ciao Marco,

if you speak about pcm5102, you can't play DSD file.
You only can with ak dac.

You can always use a player like jriver to play dsd to flac on the fly.

What player and which OS are you using?

I am on OSX. Both Audirvana and Pure Music are working perfectly. No drivers are required.

On Windows, you must install the XMOS drivers from here: http://www.jlsounds.com/uploads/XMOS-Stereo-USB-Audio-Class2-Driver-2023(v2.15).rar . (it is mandatory, as it contains also the ASIO driver).
After that, you can use the guide from audiostream: How To Play a DSD File: using Foobar2000 | AudioStream .

I'm using foobar on Win8.1 , drivers installed , and I've found that guide while I was trying some DSF file. Maybe I didn't follow it right, I'll try tomorrow night with a foobar clean install.

Grazie! I've tried them with both boards (I was verifying all was ok on arrival), but I know it should work just with the AKM. JRiver...mmm...

Anyway it looks like a sw local problem: even AudioGate plays them in PCM at 192.

Hi,

...
Also, is it possible to get DSD256 and DSD512 support on the XMOS chip?

According to my calculations - yes, but for now I don't plan such thing.

... One can say it could be due to the lack of external power supply, but that can be said about my Xonar too, being it internally powered by my PC PSU as well.
...

It is better to distinguish between the final product and one that is intended for finish by DIYers. Xonar is the finished product, and as such it is designed to operate powered entirely by USB. There is a compromise for leaving the possibility to feed XMOS + PCM5102 entirety from USB host. One can show the full potential using external power. This is due to the small size that I aimed.

...
1) Is it possible to use an USB cable without the +5V wire if we are powering the boards externally ?
2) Is it possible to separate the supply for the reclocker/oscillators from the supply of the DAC?

1) Yes, you can. Please check the specification file.
2) If you mode the DACs' PCB - you can do this :)

...
I don't understand how to use this button (there are two holes, it is not really a button), nor how I can see wich status (FIR/IIR) is now running. Is there a led?...

You can use on/off switch. There is no LED for filter on PCM5102 board, but you could wire the LED to the switch. You could use this kind of switch:

APEM 1A11-NF1STSE 2A Toggle Switch, SPST, On-On, 250Vac from Conrad.com

SCI Car toggle switch 20 A R13-404L BL LED 1-pole On/off 12 Vdc 20 A from Conrad.com

On the AK4396 board, there is a microcontroller, which observes the button (that's why there is a push button).

There is a guide on specifications page for configuration of Foobar for DSD.

Happy Holidays to all of you guys.

Regards,
Joro

Happy Holidays to you too, Joro!

I have finished my 2nd Salas shunt and it powers the XMOS board at the moment. Its improvement is clearly audible.
However, the XMOS board is not recognized by the computer if I am using an USB cable that has no +5V cable.
In the AK496's PDF is a refernce to this: "External power supply for USB part on pin11 and pin12. On I2SoverUSB board, USB jumper is opened and on AK4396 board, configuration jumpers are opened. In this way I2SoverUSB board consumes less than 10mA from USB host." If I understand correctly, there is something that needs power from the USB port (probably handshake-related?).
So the answer would be: no, it is not possible to use an USB cable that has no +5V wire even if the XMOS board is externally powered. :)

Well, I have an update: the USB XMOS board does work fine with a cable that lacks the +5V wire. The problem was my Mac Mini. It seems that the XMOS board is not recognized by the system if connected directly to MacMini's USB 3 ports. However, from the monitor's USB 2 hub works fine. Weird.
On Windows there are no compatibility problems.
