How Not To Pack DHTs For Postal Shipment

I have also had some GM70 turn up wrapped in foam just like yours. Mine were in the usual blue Russian printed box but the box was huge and full of newspaper. The tubes were fine as were eight 4p1l that were in with them. I was surprised they had not been smashed to bits by each other.

I'm sorry to hear your woes, I hope it is resolved sharply.

Cheers
Matt.
Oh sad news indeed, sorry to read it.
Once I ordered a GM70 pair and after a longer wait than usual one tube arrive with a loose glass piece inside.
They came inside that same standard Russian cartoon box you mention with news sheets, maybe from the same vendor, he refused to send a replacement and asked me to return the tube.

Having been in the Ukraine and having dealt with their postal system I wouldn't buy anything fragile or of any value from there. Even if something is appropriately packaged the post office will often open packages and repackage them before sending them. I had a package of books arrive which started their journey in a stout cardboard box, when they arrived they were wrapped in brown paper and string.
This is most revolting.
Also I never forget the Discovery channel doc about the Fedex work in unloading a cargo big jet plane.
The workers were troglodytes with low IQ, and the chief of staff managed the situation/mens as a football game.
He was only concerned in discharging the load in the shortest time possible.

Well, I have bought over 1000 tubes from former Soviet states, and only ever had 2 broken. A GU-50 and a 6C19P. Both were in boxes that had been wet and were caved in.
It seems that you have picked the worst packers and handlers.
The GM70's I have were rolled in 2 inches of foam rubber with foam "end caps" inside a sturdy box lined with polystyrene.

Yagoolar, that was excellent packing indeed.

FullRangeMan, honestly surprised the tubes arrived without broken glass let alone damaged internals. The GM70 have sat happily in my breadboard with 1000V on the anode and been driven hard into A2 without issue. I was lucky. Seriously rugged tubes. Sound great too.

I recently got some 4p1l that were packed very well from the same supplier. Trouble is the alloy is badly corroded. The pins are not at all, like another thread at the moment. I am not too worried though as they work fine and are rather old examples.

Cheers
Matt.

Confirmed with my Keithley 2002 meter that the fourth tube which visually looks OK also has an open filament.

The cold filament dcr of a good GM70 is approximately 0.8 ohms which is surprisingly low. Definitely a good idea to heat these with a CCS to limit cold inrush stress.

The seller has not replied to my latest messages nor commented on the pictures I sent him.

I have not disclosed that to him, and probably won't. I hope he does the right thing and either refunds my payment or ships me properly packed replacements. The tubes are covered under eBay's insurance program so if they find in my favor I will get fully reimbursed.

I hope for an amicable and fair settlement under which circumstances his identity will remain unknown.

I completely agree and I would hate to do anything to damage someone's business. Nevertheless, I find that some people need a little bit of gentle encouragement to "do the right thing". Ignoring email messages is not a good start. I am expecting some degree of compensation for 2 boxes of noval valves with corroded pins, 20% of which have totally lost their vacuum. The seller, likewise, has not responded to my message.

Happy Ending

The seller offered me the option of a full refund or the replacement of the complete set of 4 with a new set, which he indicated would be very carefully packed. Since it was always the tubes I wanted I accepted the offer for replacements. I suspect these will be the best packed tubes ever.. :D

I would say that most people here who regularly buy from eastern europe would say that all of these sellers are honest; it is very competitive after all so a scammer would not survive long. That does not mean that they don't make mistakes occasionally, as we all do. They may not know about fragile thoriated tungsten filaments until a shipment is destroyed. Kevin's supplier of GM70 will not make this mistake again. You can find scattered across this site the ebay user names of sellers who have particularly pleased the denizens of diyaudio.com. If you wish to buy small quantities of completely reliable parts and want the utmost in personal service then you will not find anyone better than Dmitriy Kolevatov, user name uralspirit. He also speaks perfect English and really knows exactly what he is doing.

Mr. KevinKR,
I suspect the GM70 pins melt at the glass are the same than the 6C33 and may be at the same position than the 6C33 too.
It would allow us use the reliable Russian and low priced 6C33 sockets by removing the aluminium GM70 base.

So as you had some dead GM70 I wonder if you would sacrifice one GM to science and break this ceramic base and removing the alu base to show us how is the GM70 glass pinage.
Thanks in advance.
