Latest PCB received mid August 2013
This PCB says 101110PCB, which means 10 November 2011. By the way, all latest Lepai amps have red PCB, not blue. Also, the "LEPAI" has been changed to "LEPY".

Component-wise, all latest Lepai amps use 2 relays, not one. The inductors are replaced with ferrite core sealed in black polyolefin shrink tubing.

This is a "110413PCB"...

I have detected a flaw in the latest batch of Lepai amps and have already feedback the issue to the manufacturer. They are looking into the matter now.

The Lepai on the left is from previous batch. The one on the right is from the latest batch dated "130811PCB". Notice the RCA left and right sockets are swopped.

The Lepy LP2020A+ (130623PCB) gets to see the sunlight!

C-R-C-R-C etc'. Caps and resistors?

I assume you're using full-range folded-horn speakers of c. 112 dB/W?:D

I am using humble old klipsch heresy cabinets, with Lambda 12". About 100 dB, at 2.3 W. I used to use edgarhorns, with 105 dB/W. They used The 15" Lambdas Nick McKinney built for Bruce at my humble request. He used triple magnets and stuff like that.

The upgraded wire from the switching 3A 12W to the Lepy LP-2020A+ (red board 130623PCB) is Cowgirl-Rodeo-Cowboy-Rodeo-Cowgirl-Rodeo-Cowboy-Rodeo-Cowgirl-Rodeo-Cowboy-Rodeo-Cowgirl. All those Rodeos and Cowfolks take more space than the amp...

This morning our local electrical power grid went bye bye, so, I enjoyed the early morning silence to open the mysterious LP-2020A+ and have a look see...

It is much tinier than I realized looking at all the cool pictures on this Internet.

My parts upgrades are arriving, so I took this first opening to put in the first 10A 10uH choke. It is L1 on the Lepy board. Everybody gotta start someplace. I have four more of that choke for the output stage.

It was my first use of the pointed soldering tip on my Hoka temperature controlled soldering station.. I have changed parts on commercial CD players, in days gone past, but nothing this tiny :)

The choke I took off the Lepy board was a tiny, solid thing. I assume there were coils inside the case. The 10A 10uH unit is a ferrite doughnut with a few turns on it. The chokes I use on tube amps are only a few hundred mA, but, like 50H.

Anyway, it was my first upgrade on a board with SMDs on it.

Even my upgrade choke was pretty small, but, it barely fit on the board.

Soldering was a change of scale and pace, but, it is fun to actually do something constructive.

After a couple of hours to remove and replace one two connection choke, I buttoned the amp up and hooked it up and turned it on and it lit up!

I put everything away and came to the PC to start the Music. I tuned it on and went to adjust the volume. No sound. I assumed I messed something up and was opening up the case when I noticed I had neglected to plug in the RCA cables... I put the screws back in and played the Music. It is still playing. I love this hobby :)

Happy Ears!

Al
