I think there are lots of decent candidates in the 6-8" range for far less than $102 each price: Peerless, Silver Flute, Eminence, etc (where's that silly good Mark Audio Woofer 6 / EL166 when you need em? ;))

You could even try a lower XO for the FF85WK - in a small vented box like several of Dave's, they are quite capable a couple of octaves below 500Hz.

I'm using a pair of them in approx 2L "microFonken" boxes at both home and work, where in the very near field, max SPL and bass extension isn't a big concern.

We also had great success with a bipole pair of 4" Peerless mid-bass in a narrow tower which matched the little tapered microT boxes for the FF85WK.

Thanks for the reply!!

I actually have these drivers sitting here...was gonna use them for something else but decided that was too much of an expense at this time...so I figured for giggles I could maybe match them up to something in the single driver catagory???

by which you mean the SEAS are on hand and currently not being used?

In that case, by all means they should "make do";)

While both could work well enough in small sealed boxes ( as small as .4 ft^3/11.5 liters for the SEAS?), I'd be loathe to shortchange the FF85WK thus, it's very capable dynamically in the vented designs I mentioned earlier.

The real questions would be re the XO- exactly at what frequency and how - the SEAS appears to have a resonant peak between 400 and 600 that would be very nice to avoid.

By all means eh...LOL!!!

I thought about putting them in a 1 cubic foot sealed box...running a minidsp for the xover...this way I can play with some curves...

You're still thinking of running the Fostex in a vented box to go lower and just fill in the bottom?? Heck...why not...could probably do both in the same cabinet!!

2L vented?? Will do some searching to see what is being used...

Thanks!!

check this thread from a few years back
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/144099-thread-tysen-variations-fast.html

This was with the previous version of this size, the FF85K - no slouch itself, and the topology is very mutable for different configurations of bass drivers.

the original rectangular version of "microfonken" for FF85K

The WK works in a even smaller volume for this tuning formula, hence the trapezoid version (for which I can't find personal photos, or a link to any on the forums - Dave no doubt could remedy that)

Well...today I played around and came up with this...from you Dave!!

Frick...is this thing small LOL!!!!

I also threw those SEAS into a 17L sealed cabinet...something I had laying around already...

So...hopefully by Friday the 85's will be in...burn them in for a few days and see how it goes!!

In the mean time...gonna build something new for my EL70's :)
