i am serious about building a set of speakers to last for long time. i have tried
sealed, reflex, blh tqwt etc. for last 15 years.

Planning to take horn route, 2 way is preferred. Need your advice on the following:

-my room is 24'X15' half i use for listening half is dining so listening area is 12'x15' - speakers will sit against 12' wall with no or 1''-3'' gap- question is which will be better for bass duty -LA SCALA (bass section only) or PETITE ONKEN or ALTEC 816. I will make the bass boxes myself.

-affordable compression driver for 500hz-16000hz duty and their suitable wood horn. I will craft the horn myself with friend's help.

-i believe in kiss and need your suggestion on simple tube friendly crossover. i like to drive the speaker with my home brew 300bse with 5 watt output 2.2 ohm zo.

Appreciate your help / advice / guidance - I live in Bangladesh and I will have to import the components - so there is little room for errors.

Best Regards

The La Scala will certainly have more and lower bass output than the Petit Onken.
Not sure of your budget, but for a compression driver that will really do 500-16K you'll be looking at 1.4", maybe 2". It won't be cheap.

Hi Pano

I appreciate your input. May I place the la scala bass bin against back wall (without gap)? My budget for Com driver is $300-500 - which one to cover 500hz-16000hz! Need your suggestion for diy wood horn for them.

Any thought for crossover setup?

Best regards

I did some backloaded horn 2 way constructions
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/170024-project-presentation-horn-almighty.html but below 50Hz it is a real problem.

Onken is a possibility.

I would advise two 98db 15-18" drivers in a bass-reflex to have good bass and 101db sensitively. bas-reflex Is the only way to have compact sub-bas.

Now I listen to about 92dB 1Wmtr, 2 way with horn is very nice because it supports sub-bas down to (20) 30Hz that I do miss at higher sensitivity.

Or use 2 15"hifi woofers BR of 93 dB and come down to 30hz wit 96db 1Wmtr.

Like these ones http://www.sbacoustics.com/index.php/products/woofers/15-sb42fhc75-6/

Do you want to go into the corners, or just flat against the wall?
Also, you mentioned 16" woofers like the 1601 and the 515. How about the regular size Onken box with the 416 instead of the petit?

For your compression driver there are a lot out there, including the new Altec 288 made by Great Plains Audio. Have a look at manufacturers like Eighteen Sound, Beyma, Faital Pro and B&C.
Obviously you will have to judge local costs vs shipping and import fees.

My proposal for a 3 way front loaded horn like la scala.

Low 18 sound. result 1PHI

Hi Flaesh,
No Radian dealer in Bangladesh.
I do not know much about CD horn.

Pano
If it is 15''/16'' group then my liking is 1601, 515 etc with alnico magnet possibly not the modern 15'' with sysnthetic cone/coil forma. Actually I want to try 12'' range like altec 414z cause I think it will be better for my smallish space as well will be easier to intigrate with the HF horn in a 2 way config.
Can I try Yuichi Arai's hyperbolic A290 Wood Horn.

I have heard and read that gp 288 is inconsistent measurement wise. It is a 1.4'' driver may be it will be difficult to mount with 2'' wood horn (do not want to use adaptors)

Helmuth
I believe wood is best for box/horn material. front horn for 50hz -500 is not possible / practical for my room. 3 way may be best compromise but i am afaird my 5watt 300b se amplifier would be more happy with a 2way config. Also I would like to avaoid many crossover points. My goal is 40/50hz - 16000hz thats all.

I am sure with your prudent guidance I will reach my goal.

OK, what choices do you have in Bangladesh? Or what can you get from India, maybe?

I'm not sure about a 2" throat compression driver getting you cleanly to 16Khz. Maybe someone else will know. The Petit Onken is very nice, I heard it many times in Paris. Not as efficient as the bigger box, but fine for medium size spaces.

There is an Onken thread current on this forum.

no choice in Bangladesh. I can get Ahuja CDH1000 from India Ahuja Sound Solutions this is a 2'' compression drive they say it covers 500hz-18000hz

Actually I am not looking at locally available product rather I will import from any country that fits my budget. Many of my relatives stay in USA/Euro they can hand carry for me when they come home.

Altec A7/model 19 (2 way) - HF unit covers 1k-15k nicely right? should I try altec drivers then?

 that's good! so you can buy directly :) search about "Radian 950PB" on this forum..
"Can I try Yuichi Arai's horn" - I think you can..

Ahuja 90x40 horn is one of jbl 2380a (http://www.jblpro.com/pub/components/2380a.pdf) clones (it's what I'm currently using; relatively cheap ready-made solution)

Ahuja driver is 3" diaphragm, unknown and undocumented, so can't be recommended..
