Marantz CD63 & CD67 mods list

What's the input voltage of the clock? Multiply that by 1 amp and you have the power it consumes. For example, if it's 12V, that means 12W. You can solder with that! All that heat has to go somewhere, so there must be some parts on that board that get really hot. It's either that or the spec's or design are seriously flawed.

You should put a DMM in series with the clock, to check if the current is really 1A.

I'm suprised something is not sliding off the pcb! (A bit like Simons super reg in his Philips cd player about 6 month ago) :D

I don't think he has finished it yet, he put it in to show size of pcb. I think he will be running the 5V from it

Yep, thats right, the plan is to power the DAC off it. Either that or build another coffin reg. It is a Salas shunt reg board and I am waiting on parts, I just mounted it the case to plan the layout. I know they use quite a bit of power, but I assume I will get a high quality 5V feed from it?

The designer of the clock said "The TCXO need high transcient current. I ever use lower powered TCXO, but it sound not as good as high power type I used now."

Hello Guys,outer & inner foil of poly caps,how should it be terminate, please advise on the orientation.

Most caps have some kind of marking, like a black stripe, different wire lengths to indicate the outer foil (mostly the shorter wire) or, like Brent indicated, the direction of the print on the sleeve. Anyhow, it SHOULD be indicated in the manufacturers datasheet. This side is tied to GND usually, so the outer foil acts as a shield. In signal coupling applications, the outer foil goes towards the source of the signal (so the inner foil is connected to the output sockets or the next stage, the input side). The idea is that the signal source side has lowest impedance and is less susceptable to noise.

In the case of a CD player's output cap, it's less critical. Signal levels are quite high at that point, so the influence of noise is limited. Nonetheless, it doesn't hurt to insert them correctly, it doesn't cost anything extra :D.

I've used a salas shunt reg and they are very very good however......
They are large (you could fit about 5 very good normal sized regs in the same space). The are greedy and they run very hot.

Personally, i'd fit a couple of PSU's and half a dozen regs in the same space!

I asked myself a lot of times how Salas shunt would perform powering some chips in my CDP but I never tryed them because of the heat generated.

I am very interested in the outcome because these shunts can produce really impressive results.

As for now, I will keep using Brent´s splendid spowers.

Hi ricardo, here is something I've yet to hear make a decent sound!

The regs run really hot just ticking over, i've had all sorts of issues with I2S input from my player and have just (arrived today) got hold of yet another CD50 purely to run I2S to this DAC (just for testing!). 2 pos rail and 2 neg rail psu's with 15x 1800uF on each rail! into 4 salas regs 3 for the TDA and 1 for the clock logic! All local decoupling with BG FK's and Nichicon solid polymer. TBH this should really be the last DAC I ever build!! If the Salas regs are that good, the I/V and 7220 will get them too!

The boards were group buy's on here and the a lot of the development came from ultimate NOS thread. The regs are stright off the forum too.

However........

It is my opinion that inside the 63 where space is a premium, a small opamp feedback reg is the best option. I'd rather have Brents 26 SPowers inside my player than 3 shunt regs (based on the amount of space they take up)!

It will be intersting to see what happens when I get this sorted but I'm hoping that it really is the ultimate.......:cool:
