Hi banause...that is sposed to be a good op-amp..let us know how you get on....on a slightly different note, I have just recieved my tentlabs xo, so I will report back once I have fitted it.I will use an internal 5vdc source ( not the existing 3.3vdc ) from the reg just until I build a suitable supply.

this is how i managed to get bitperfect digital sound from usb.
i bought one of those usb to spdif units from china (ebay)
it uses burr brown pcm 2906 which is considered to be better than other brand usb-chips concerning jitter.
on windows xp i'm using asio4all as driver and i get the real 44,1 instead of 48khz

hd 970 usb
did some work today...
i soldered the browndogs with the ad 797s and i integrated the usb pcb... so now it's a hd 970 usb
i kept the rca sockets and connect with a wire. so it still can use other coaxial sources.
now i'll give the 797s some days to burn in before i compare to my stock hd 970 and a arcam cd192 of a friend.

it seems they all are files for the version 1 player
both of mine use sanyo hd65 laser.
but i fixed them by getting a new laser pickup.
changing the whole laser unit did not work in both cases because of firmware issues... just changing the laser pickup worked fine!!

HD970 not reading many CDs
Hi,
I saw that my HD970 may not be the only one that cannot read CDs. Actually it can read one out of five CDs that I throw at it.
There seems to exist a software update that solves the problem?
Where can I find that update and how do I upload it to the CD player?
(I know very well my way around computers, but I am not too much in hi-fi modding).

My turn to report.
A friend wanted a new CD player with balanced output. Minimum effort, under 500 Euros.
So we bought him a HD970 on the internet (new), a ZF2, then a bunch of caps (FC's for the large power supply caps, Silmic II for the analog small caps, and BG STD 10uF for all digital local caps.
Totally rewired, as you can see. Heat spreader (2.5mm AL) and GapPad 5000S35 for the ZF2, ... etc.
The sound ? MUCH better than I expected.
Lots of details, almost too much. Easily on par with my Meridian 508-24. Definitely worth the money.
Am going to try Styroflex later in place of the silver micas to see whether it tames down the brightness a touch.
But I would still be happy with it as is.

I notice that the LC Audio shunt supply has 2x 10 watt 56ohm resistors on it, is this what came from LC? because they are usually 6watters, or did you put them on?
As it's usually the tracks underneath that lead to those resistors fry up in the end, and need beefing up with copper wire soldered along their lenghts.

Came as is.
The resistors are about 50°C, as is the ZF2, so for me normal temperature. I do not see how that could fry the PCB ?
Current is about 200mA; if it fries the PSU PCB, it will also fry the shunt regulator part of the ZF2 ??
But thanks for the tip. More areas to watch out for ?

Hi George, I'm impressed with feedback from users of your modded HD970's. I bought it recently and I would like to improve it.
I have DIY speakers based on the on scanspeak 18W8535 drivers + HK3480 amp, silver IC's. I would like to improve the sound scene and depth maybe some others.
I would manage some simple opamp changes maybe some more but need some guidance on . I would normally send it to you but it's not possible regarding distance from europe to Australia.
Would you be so kind to help me with modding? Do you think its worth doing some mods or keep it unchanged? I would need info about what to change and how and info about quality of parts to buy etc. ( i don't know if those are in different qualities in shops or ebay)

Rafal hi, the only simple mod without going beserk like I did would be to change the SMD OP275 I/V opamps for something better, I would suggest SMD AD825's but these are singles and the OP275's are dual so you would have to find a 2 x single smd to single dual smd converter board, this would be the place to look.
