Best high eff fullrange in the 500$ range...?

How big is the throat of your horn?

At the moment its 2 inches, but I will shorten it if I decide to use a fullranger. Therefore the smaller diameter driver, the better the horn will load. If I were to use a 7-8 inch driver the horn will be so short it will be more or less a waveguide instead...

There is. Sort of. Basket stiffened, 7k peak killed (at least in a FR measure, you can still hear it a bit), motor the same thou. Derek has a pair.

The planet10 version or is it different? :)

I would like to hear a pair of 5" sonidos with Alnico magnet, but I don't have the money to just play around. They are about 350usd a pair I think.

They are very interessting! :)

I hope the graph is accurate, if so its exceptional. But I cant seem to find the alnico version. Do you know the price of the one I linked? It says the pricelist will come soon on their website...

Do anyone have an idea what will beam more, a 2" compression driver, or a 5 inch full range in the horn pictured below? (horn shortened for the 5 inch full range)

Even though the horn is considerably longer and a more narrow expansion rate with a 2" throat compression driver, than with a 5 inch fullranger?

No, if you are physically limiting dispersion with a longer more narrow throat for the 2" compression driver then it might well not have as broad a high freq. dispersion pattern (..depending on the dispersion character of the fullrange driver and the expansion rate of its horn). However..

One of the problems associated with a fullrange driver and horn (that a good compression driver and horn should not have), is a poorly coupled high freq. output. Specifically where the wavelength is NOT bounded to the horn but is reflecting in the horn. This often takes place where the driver's dispersion is still quite wide (wider than the horn) yet the freq.'s wavelength doesn't "reach" the horn's walls before reflection. Depending on horn expansion and driver diameter, this can typically happen anywhere from about 2.5 kHz up (though less so at the highest octave where most fullranges are beaming significantly). Not only does it sound as if the sound is coming from the loudspeaker, but it also tends to sound as if imaging is LARGE (..larger than it should be).

Practically speaking this is all better modeled than rambled on about. Because you are using conical horns, axidriver should help you determine what driver is better suited to a horn shape.

Yes, peaky does not come to mind when I think of the 126en.
126en is still my favorite flavor. I've licked a lot of others, but I always seem to come back to that one. Like mint chocolate chip.

With all the horrible measurements ive seen with Lowther units, I can only guess people buy them because of the brand and pricetag, which fools them to think they bought something good... But thats just my opinion :)

An improved pimped out Fostex FE126 driver would be great too... :D

I don't know why no one's mentioned the Fostex FE138ES-R Limited Edition 5" Full Range
Fostex FE138ES-R Limited Edition 5" Full Range from Madisound
they were $459 each, but come in just within budget now.
--totally subjective, but-- i (and several others present who discussed it) felt they were far better than "pimped out fe126s w/ poka dots, etc."
an order of magnitude difference; more color, timbre, life--music gets through.
played them in the same room, same system with 5" feastrex, and PM6a Lowthers (in lecleach horns).
what i found interesting was how the 138/lowther/feastrex still sounded so different, from each other.

I just emailed Sonido about the sfr144-8 asking if it was available with an alnico magnet. They wrote back that the sfr145A is available at US$ 315 a pair with shiping
at US$ 65 for surface shipping of $100 for air. Has anyone here compaired them to
the FE138ES-R ? By the way Madisound has these on special for $249 each.
