First of all, hello from me - this being my first post and all.
I was wondering if some kind soul could suggest a source for decent quality knobs. I am looking to install an Alps RK50 pot in a simple home made passive pre-amp. However, beautiful bit of kit though the RK50 is, it has a rather non-standard 8mm shaft and all the knobs I can find are 6mm.
Any suggestions?

I don"t know if they have the exact knobs you want but Smallbear has a pretty good selection , about 45 different types of knobs ....

Thanks, but they aren't really what I am looking for.
The RK50 is a fabulous pot (should be at $500+!) but the 8mm shaft is a real problem. I can only find one or two knobs that fit and those are cheap and horrible - hardly appropriate for the pot. Why on earth Alps couldn't have put a 6mm shaft on it is beyond me.

I make my own wooden knobs by using a hole saw and go about half way and stop. Then I counter bore it to accept a smaller metal knob with set screws. Then remove the piolet from the hole saw and complete boring it. Then I drill holes from the side to be able to reach the set screws. Then I epoxy the metal knob in the center, put a shaft in it and mount it in the drill press to sand.

I've purchased knobs from vt4c.com (nice variety, very good quality) and from a variety of sellers on ebay (mostly Hong Kong-based and never a problem), but haven't seen any drilled for an 8mm shaft. But so what? I regularly buy knobs that are drilled for a 6mm shaft and redrill them for 1/4" (6.3mm). Why don't you buy a nice 6mm or 6.3mm-shafted knob and redrill it for 8mm?

I have considered drilling out a knob to 8mm, but an extra 1mm either side is a lot to drill out, if the "cylinder" on the inside of the knob is only 1mm or so thick. And then there's the issue of the whether the grub screw will have enough thread to bite on in order to get a firm grip.
All in all, it's not ideal, but I may be forced to go down that route.

The "cylinder" is several mm thick, so it would be no problem to drill it to fit 8 mm. I also think (but not sure) that the threads go all the way from the outside to the centre of the knob.
I have the same pot as you in a 10K version. I will be using a shaft coupler to couple the 8mm shaft to a 6mm rod. (The pot will be located at back of the chassis. )

I know this is rather old thread, but in case you haven't found a good knob for your pot, I might be able to help you out. See attached photos for possibilities.
Material choice is stainless, red and yellow bronze, titanium and aluminium. As they are all made one-by-one basis, you can have any size (within a reason, of course
) you want. Just for the info, the large knob on the left of second photo is stainless and weighs 440 grams.
